First ballet classes

Alexandra is now 4 years old. She started taking ballet classes when she was 2 and one half years old. Her mother stopped taking her to ballet because it was just way too far to drive.

Then something exciting happened; a new dance studio opened up just around the corner from where she lived! Alexandra’s mother took her to see the new place. This new dance studio is Milly/Frank Arts Studio. They have all the arts but Alexandra was only interested in one thing, ballet!

She could hardly wait for the first class. Her grandma took her to Gigi's Dance Closet to get a new Ballet outfit complete with a big pink bow for her hair, and a new bag to carry her dancing shoes in. Alexandra got to pick out everything herself. Of course she has good taste and only wanted the latest outfit in style, Ouch, where did she learn that?

Alexandra arrives early

Too early at the door

On the first day of class Alexandra was up and at the studio early.

So early that it still said "Closed" on the sign in the door.

She leaned on the door to open it, but it wouldn’t budge.

Then she decided that she would have to sit in the chair on the steps and wait for it to open.

That was hard.

Soon the door opened and Alexandra was the first to rush inside. She ran around to inspect the place while other students began to arrive.

She went to sign in and really liked that she could sign her name herself. She felt so grown up. All the kids that could write their names got to sign in for themselves. This was a very nice boost for her ego.  Milly/Frank Arts studio is a very kid friendly studio.

Waiting to start

Alexandra sat on a bench with her mom waiting for class to start until she could sit still no longer, and began showing all the mothers sitting on the benches around the room her ballet moves.

Alexandra was not shy and needed to occupy herself until class started.

Later when the class took a short break some of the girls gathered around in the kitchen area and sat on stools drinking water while they discussed what they had learned in class with Frank.

Then they rushed back into class eager to learn more.

After a quick drink of water and change of shoes they were back in class, tapping in their tap dance shoes. That is always very interesting.

Milly, Frank’s wife, put on music for the parents and had an exercise dance class for any parents that wanted to be occupied while the kids were in class. That was fun and a great way to entertain the mothers. We might have lost a little weight too. What a great idea!

When the tap class was over, Alexandra hung out on the dance bars with a friend while their parents talked to Milly and Frank.

"This is tough..."

When it was time to say good bye it was hard to get Alexandra out of the dance studio.

She was not happy that we had to leave and pouted all the way to the car.

"Can't come back unless you smile..."
"Can't come back unless you smile..."

Her mother had to tell her that if she didn’t get happy and smile she would not come back.

Do you see that smile? I think Alexandra wants to come back and dance!

Your opening photograph of her pushing against a closed door reminds me of a modern Norman Rockwell. It personifies the focus children have to create what they want. A focus which can be retained throughout adulthood. Of course Ruth Read would create such a photograph!
